I'm 28 now; I'll be 30 if I start after holding off a year. I've been briefed on what I could be doing after this project at work is completed in October, it may or may not bolster my profile.

Given this and the fact that you are yet to give your GMAT (let alone your school research and your essays) I would say: Hold off for a year. But then again that's my advice and I am a current applicant. So, please take my advice with a pinch of salt. You should contact some of the other folks here (Rhyme, Pelihu, Lepium) who are '07 admits. They will have some good advice to share with you.

I'm preparing for my GMAT by myself until Kaplan starts in September. My GMAT is at the end of October. I've committed to applying to at least Tepper and Babson, but schools such as Lally, Chicago GSB, and Kenan-Flagler are on the fence. I'm probably going to get to complete my applications in time for the R2 deadlines at the earliest, though I haven't gotten started on a personal summary, formally setting up recommenders, and working on application essays...let alone considering financial aid.

On top of that, I'm part of a massive CRM initiative at work that will get really intense during September and October up to its launch date.

Is my timeframe to apply to MBA programs too compressed? Should I hold off a year?

With due respect to others' opinions, I would say this:

1. First see where ur practice GMAT score is
2. If it is in good range, can you take the exam before October?
3. 28 is just the average age of the applicants. Do you want to make it a negative, by getting older?
4. You can shoot for R2. In my opinion R2 is as good as R1.
5. You might perhaps want to minimize the number of schools to which you apply. Instead of planning for more than 6, you can restrict your self to 4.

-Took a practice GMAT (paper version) and bombed, hence the Kaplan class a month before the test.

-Does Adcomm really discriminate against older applicants, especially if they think an extra year at work to see a project through is worth the wait?

-If I hold off, it can give me more time to flesh out my personal profile, fill in those last 2 spots for programs, and hand in better application components during R1.

Any other users here run into this similar dilemma?

bombing to me is around a 500. A month of prep, in 99% of all cases, will not get 200 point improvement.

I'd put it off a year. I believe you are underestimating how long it can take to gather reco's, write 4 essays 6 times each (we all end up there), and still study for the GMAT.
