Hi All,

Most GMAT questions that you see on Test Day will be based on one (or more) patterns. If you can spot the pattern, then you can answer many questions relatively quickly; if you can't immediately spot the pattern though, you can still find it with a little bit of work.... This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES.

We're asked if N(N+1) is a multiple of 3. This is YES/NO question.

Fact 1: N(N-1) is a multiple of 3

IF....
N = 3
3(2) = 6
3(4) = 12 and the answer to the question is YES.

IF...
N = 4
4(3) = 12
4(5) = 20 and the answer to the question is NO.
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

Fact 2: N-2 is a multiple of 3

IF....
N = 5
5(6) = 30 and the answer to the question is YES.

IF....
N = 8
8(9) = 72 and the answer to the question is YES.

IF....
N = 11
11(12) = 132 and the answer to the question is YES.
Fact 2 is SUFFICIENT

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Sol.
Statement: (1) n(n − 1) is a multiple of 3.
Let’s try some numbers.
If n = 3 then, n(n-1) is multiple of 3 and n(n+1) = 12 (Multiple of 3) Ans. Yes
If n = 4 then n(n-1) is multiple of 3 and n(n+1) = 20 (Not Multiple of 3) Ans. NO
Hence statement (1) is not sufficient. A and D Eliminated
Statement: (2) n − 2 is a multiple of 3.
If n = 5 then, (n-2) is multiple of 3 and n(n+1) = 30 (Multiple of 3) Ans. Yes
If n = 8 then (n-2) is multiple of 3 and n(n+1) = 72 (Multiple of 3) Ans. Yes
Since (n-2) is multiple of 3 hence (n+1) will be the next number multiple of 3.
Hence statement (2) is sufficient.
Correct answer is B.
