is there a common application you can use to apply to multiple schools (i know you have to adjust your essay)? if so is this frowned upon?

Unlike medical school's utilization of AMCAS, business schools do not have a "shared application" system in place. Whichever b-school you want to apply to, you'd have to set up an account and fill out the application. Having said that, most of the basic background (personal information, education information, test scores, etc) is going to be the same; therefore, it's really just tedious. The essays are the place where each school varies. Most school will ask (or will expect some form of answers) why xyz school, why now, what you can contribute, why an MBA and why now. These are the typical questions. Then, of course, we got the behavioral questions, such as Wharton's create-a-class or Booth's "powerpoint presentation".

Well there is the consortium and other groups that offer a common app, but you have to write one essay for each school along with the common materials.
