Hi,
Stmnt 1- X could be pos or neg so insuff
Stmnt 2- y could be 0 so again insuff
Both together also insuff

Both:- x is a -ve no. coz 0^2 is not positive no.

Right. However, if y=0, x can be positive or negative because it results in zero, which is not positive. This question is a bit more involved than it appears.

OA I have is E. from i, x could obviously be -ve or +ve. from ii, x could be -ve, 0 or +ve when y is 0. when y is none-zero, x could be -ve, or 0.

so E makes sense.
