is X positive?

1. |x|=|y| insufficient we don't know the value of y

2. x=-y insufficient do a few scenarios

X = -y

-3=-(3) no x is negative
3=-(-3) yes x is positive
INSUFFICIENT

Together? hmmm.

|X| = |Y|

|3| = |-3| x is positive

|-3| = |3| x is negative

Answer is E both are insufficient

yes, y can be either positive or negative thus effecting the sign of x.

if y =3, then x=-3
if y=-3, then x=3

I just used 3 but, of course, you can use any number (doesn't even have to be an integer, according to the problem) you want.

i hope i've answered your question.

cheers!
