We have to consider two cases
1) if x is positive no matter what is the value of y, the result will be positive
2) if y is even no matter what is the value of x, the result will be positive

1 stm --> x is positive. Suff
2 stm --> y is negative. insuff

\(x^{–y}\) positive

#1
x +ve ; then y whether + or -ve will not make difference
sufficient as value will be +ve only
#2
y is -ve ; then value of x should be +ve as well , else its insufficient when x=-ve ;
x is not know in this cases

Statement 1: x = positive
y could be +/- ; either way, it will determine whether the result is x or (1/x) raise to power y and the result will be positive always.

Sufficient.

Statement 2: y= negative
x could be +/- ; similar to statement 1's explanation, sign of x will not depend on y but on x alone.

Not sufficient.



Answer: A.
