Since YLP Essay submissions deadlines are close, in this post, I share some sample ISB YLP essays by previously successful applicants and point out some common observations across the successful essays:
Observations:
1. Highlight as many achievements/position of responsibilities as you can. Applicants constantly mention about an event they organized, a sports competition they won.
Big or small doesn't matter, your fest doesn't have to be the biggest in the country. This is why not just people from top colleges get selected.
2. Spice these achievements with some specific details that show a 'spike'. Mention the '250' students you managed. Or maybe the '5 Lakhs' budget you managed or '15 lakhs sponsorship' you pulled in
3. Explain your current interest and justify it with previous historical actions.
For example, if you mention an interest in Finance, you must have something to back it up.
Perhaps an internship in a company or doing a CFA level 1. Again, since YLP applicants are still very young and unexperienced, your interest doesn't need to be very specific and can be on a very high level.
4. Mention a broad plan that you have in the long term future. It is not important for this future goal to be completely related to your current experience/interest.
What is important is that you should be able to justify why you have the interest to keep such a goal post and how you plan to achieve it.
5. This is the most important observation. Almost all the applicants have shown clearly how ISB will help them bridge the gap between their present and expected future.
To do this, you need to be very specific. For example, it doesn't suffice to just say 'I will use ISB's network' for my startup since I am interested in entrepreneurship.
Rather, a much more compelling statement would be, 'I look forward to connect with ISB Alumnus Mr.X (from company A) and Mr Y (from company B) through Event A to get their insights on Marketing Concept A.
This shows that you have a very clear understanding of whatyou aim to get out of ISB.
I can recommend a site
