Issue Essay Topic:
"Some people protest the destruction of famous old buidlings, saying that we are losing priceless cultural and historical landmarks. But they forget these buidlings weren't intended to be meseums but to serve practical purposes. In replacing them, we're doing exactly what the builders of the originals did. In time, the new buildings themselves may be considering landmarks"
Here is my response. Please critque.
During this history of mankind, human being has been making landmarks to show it’s existent in a particular time range by building remarkable buildings. As generations pass by, these buildings stay unchanged and reflect the past glory. Protestor of old buildings advocate destruction of famous old buildings stating no practical purposes for these buildings. However, the old buildings signifies a particular time in the history, it’s a learning lesson for future, explains current events with context of old time and moreover destroying them means losing the old glory. The latter is more logically sound, comprehensive and convincing reason.
First of all, as stated above old buildings shows the significance of particular time in the history. One good example is Tajmahal in Agra , India. This one of the 7th wonder of the world tells the world the glorious days of India’s past. It teaches people, that during the 16’th centuary , India was greatly influenced by Islam.
Secondly, Past buildings are a learning lesson and inspiration for the future. The Independence hall in Philadelphia shows where the US constitution was written and when travelers visit this building, they relive the past and learn about the significant contribution this building made in it’s time and how it is still contributing to our society.
Third convincing reason is that past buildings help explain current events in past’s context . For example, Tajmahal in India shows that during 16th century , even though India had a major Hindu population, Muslim influence was significant. It tells the future generation that 400 years ago, diversity was appreciated and today also we should appreciate diversity if we want to live in peace and harmony as we did in the past.
In conclusion, Author’s point has little weightage. It is understandable that old buildings weren’t intended to be museums but author fails to realize the bigger impact old buildings make as mentioned above. It is imperative that old buildings that reflect the glorious old days be maintained properly for the benefit of future generations.
