The prompt is talking about "the black bear" which is a singular subject. Hence using "their" doesn't make sense.

"Its" would make more sense here.

Thanks!

I get that, however, in the non underlined part, the sentence states they hunt for fish. So, I'm confused with the usage of they later on.

It is sometimes difficult to track the prints of a black bear as, depending on the ground surface, their claws may not be visible, especially in soils that have a fair amount of sand such as grounds near lakes and rivers, where they hunt for fish.

A- It is sometimes difficult to track the prints of a black bear as, depending on the ground surface, their claws may not be visible, especially in soils that have a fair amount of sand such as grounds near lakes and rivers,

B- It is sometimes difficult to track the prints of a black bear as, depending on the ground surface, its claws may not be visible, especially in soils with a fair amount of sand such as grounds near lakes and rivers,

C- Depending on the ground surface, especially in soils with a fair amount of sand such as grounds near lakes and rivers, it is sometimes difficult to track the prints of a black bear, as its claws may not be visible

D- The black bear’s claws may not be visible, because it is sometimes difficult to track the prints, depending on the ground surface, especially in soils with a fair amount of sand such as grounds near lakes and rivers,

E- It is sometimes difficult to track the prints of a black bear as their claws may not be visible, especially in soils with a fair amount of sand such as grounds near lakes and rivers, depending on the ground surface,

1. lets analyse the given sentence - modifier 'depending on the ground surface' rightly modifies the action "to track the prints of a black bear"
2. "their" is a possessive form for "They" which is wrong as 'their claws' indicates Black bear's claws since we are talking about a single black bear so..."its" is the correct pronoun
3. "where" modifies places like rivers and lakes. and 'where they hunt for fish' is a noun modifier.

C&E can be eliminated based on point 3
D changes the original meaning of the sentence
A can be eliminated based on point 2

Hence, option B is correct.

Hope this makes sense.!!!!

Please help me understand why the solution is given as B as per the official source.

What is the source? Couldn't find it on this end.

I got this question while taking the free GMAT mock on the McGill site, I think it's by Admit Master. I suspect that the question/ sentence may itself be incorrect, but not sure.
