Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo are examples of baritone singers. They cannot be compared with baritone singers thus like cannot be used. This rules out options C and D.
'B' is too wordy... commencement of the decade of the 1930s... and decided to contribute in is changes the intent of the sentence.
had contributed in in 'E' is unidiomatic and does not go well with the sentence...

I think we have to use such as ..so C and D are out for using like.
B has "decided to" which somewhat twist the meaning and also has a wrong idiom "contributed in"
E has the idiom wrong , "contributed in".The correct idiom is "contribute to" .
So guess A is right.
