We need to find T?
Statement 1:
(1) If Jane had spent 1/3 less, the total for Jane and Tom’s clothes purchases would have been $140.
1/3 less than actual = (1-1/3) = 2/3
(2/3)J + T = $140
2J + 3T = $420
multiply original equation with 2, we get 2J+ 2T = $320
Subtracting , we get T = $100. J = $60.
Hence, sufficient Statement 2:
(2) If Tom had spent three times more, the total for Jane and Tom’s clothes purchases would have been $360.
J+ 3T = $360
J+T = $160
subtracting, we get 2T = $200
T = $100 and J = $60
Hence, Sufficient
