OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Jane thinks that Jerry would have preferred a quiet chat instead because lately he, with whom John went to play golf, has had problems at home.

A. Jerry would have preferred a quiet chat instead because lately he, with whom John went to play golf, has

This answer choice is illogical and awkward. The relative clause with whom John went to play golf is intended to modify Jerry and should thus immediately follow it.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: who, which, that, whose, whom

B. Jerry would have preferred a quiet chat instead because lately he, with whom John went to play golf, have

This answer choice repeats the original Relative Clause mistake. The relative clause with whom John went to play golf is intended to modify Jerry and should thus immediately follow it.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: who, which, that, whose, whom

In addition, the singular subject he does not agree with the plural verb have.

What helps us identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign: A long complex subject / a long distance between the subject and the verb

C. Jerry would have preferred a quiet chat to golf because lately he, with whom John went to play golf, has

D. Jerry, with whom John went to play golf, would have preferred a quiet chat instead because lately he has

The relative clause with whom John went to play golf modifies Jerry and therefore must appear immediately after it.

E. Jerry, with whom John went to play golf, would have preferred a quiet chat instead because lately she has

While this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause mistake and is grammatically correct, it changes the meaning of the original sentence by changing the word he into she - making the sentence illogical.

The lesson to be learned here is that you should pay closer attention to details. Small details can alter the entire meaning of a sentence or even constitute grammatical mistakes. After eliminating answer choices that repeat the original mistake, scan the remaining answer choices carefully and find the differences between them.
