Let the number of nickels she added be x.
According to the condition, (8+x)/(20 + x) = 4/5
40 + 5x = 80 + 4x
x = 40
Hence, correct answer is option D. 40

Jena has a jar that contains 8 nickels and 12 dimes and no other coins. If she adds nickels to the jar one at a time until the ratio of the number of nickels to the total number of coins in the jar is 4 to 5, how many nickels must she add?

A. 20
B. 24
C. 32
D. 40
E. 56

I solved it using plug in technique:

so we need to find an answer option where in ( 8 + x)/(20+x)= 4/5
value @ 40 gives the ratio 4/5
out of given options only option D satisfies the relation IMO D
