Let the number of nickels she added be x.
According to the condition, (8+x)/(20 + x) = 4/5
40 + 5x = 80 + 4x
x = 40
Hence, correct answer is option D. 40

I solved it using plug in technique:

so we need to find an answer option where in ( 8 + x)/(20+x)= 4/5
value @ 40 gives the ratio 4/5
out of given options only option D satisfies the relation IMO D
