I picked E because E is parallel to 'is looking'. Other than being wordy, what are the other errors with choice E? thanks!

I am afraid that all the choices have a fundamental diction problem. The conditional marker ‘if’ cannot be used for fixing a doubt or a preference, for which ‘whether’ is the correct word. Reluctantly, therefore, D, if we were to ignore the wrong diction

Could someone please explain the error in E?
Is it the tense - "is wondering" which may mean that he is looking and wondering at the same time..?
