Jim: A new company specializing in home exercise equipment is charging up to $2,500 for fancy treadmills featuring built-in entertainment systems and heart monitors. The marketing materials for these expensive machines claim that, with regular use, they can help people lose weight, eliminate stress and reduce the risk of heart disease. However, there is no indication that running on even the most advanced treadmill offers any health benefits that running on a track does not. Save your money. If you want to become more fit, go jogging outside.

Which of the following, if true, most calls into question Jim's argument?

A. Most people are more inclined to exercise on a state-of-the-art treadmill because it is more convenient and enjoyable than running outside.
B. Running on a treadmill can be less beneficial than running outside, which requires the use of a broader range of muscles to maintain pace and balance.
C. To most people who would be interested in buying a treadmill for their homes, $2,500 is not a major expense.
D. Jim was a member of a panel that conducted extensive evaluations of all of the leading treadmills currently on the market.
E. Studies show that devices that use electrical currents to simulate exertion are considerably less effective than traditional forms of exercise, such as push-ups and weightlifting, in promoting the development of muscle mass.

I have no doubts about A. Why is C incorrect?

Answer choice C actually has nothing to do with the argument. We are not concerned about the interest of buying a treadmill, rather interest of working-out in a treadmill. If most people buy a treadmill, then also we don't know are they going to use it or not. This answer choice actually shifts the scope of the argument.

Responding to a pm:

What is the conclusion of the argument? "Save your money by jogging outside instead of buying a treadmill."

Does C weaken it? No. It doesn't matter whether $2500 is a major expense or a minor expense. The point the author is making is that you should not spend this money since you get the same benefits from something which is free of cost. The fact that people considering buying a treadmill consider it a minor expense is no reason for them to actually buy the treadmill. You get the same benefits from something which is absolutely free. The correct option has to give you a reason why a treadmill is better than jogging outside and is hence worth some money.

Cost has nothing to do with conclusion. Find the weakness from jogging outside and you have your answer.

i think its B.
well it has nothing to do with costs but more of reason to do with the support a tread-mill gives in terms of heart rate monitoring, balance and less straining for muscles.

The question asks you to weaken Jim's argument.
B strengthens it instead!

Jim says go jogging outside instead of using a treadmill. B says jogging outside is better. So we ended up strengthening Jim's argument with B.
(A) weakens the argument since it says that there are reasons why treadmill is better than jogging outside. Hence answer is (A)

A. Most people are more inclined to exercise on a state-of-the-art treadmill because it is more convenient and enjoyable than running outside.

C. To most people who would be interested in buying a treadmill for their homes, $2,500 is not a major expense.

For choice C, since most people who are interested in buying a treadmill for their homes, and they don't think money is a major expense. This actually weakens the conclusion"Save your money." Even though it doesn't really mention about the money value in the argument, but it also weakens the conclusion. Why C is not the answer? Also, what if there is no answer A, then would C most likely can be true for this question?

Thanks,

Consider the stimulus as the MArketing campaign of 2 Companies :

M : The machine helps lose weight, eliminate stress and reduce the risk of heart disease.
J : Save your money. If you want to become more fit, go jogging outside. ( Do not buy the machine - go for jogging)
Fact : Advantage of running on most Advanced Treadmill = Running on a track

Jim's argument depends of the reason that since there is no use spending $2,500 , when the benefits of running outside and treadmill are same.. The best way to weaken the argument is to show that there are some benefits/positive features which can be attributed to the machine which running on the track/jogging outside lacks.

Option (A) simply performs the aforesaid function , it brings out the advantage of running on treadmill as convenient and enjoyable compared to running outside.

Hence Answer will be (A)

The option that most calls into question Jim's argument is: A
This statement suggests that running on a treadmill may have some disadvantages compared to running outside. If running outside requires the use of a broader range of muscles to maintain pace and balance, it implies that running on a treadmill may not provide the same level of workout intensity or engage the same muscles as running outside. Therefore, it weakens Jim's argument that running outside is a better option for becoming more fit
