Re: Jim can paint 2 houses in one day while Peter can paint 3 houses in 2 [#permalink]

Jim can paint 2 houses in one day while Peter can paint 3 houses in 2 days. How long does it take Jim and Peter to paint 7 houses if they work together?

A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 7/2
E. 9/2

We can test the answer choices, starting with integer answers:

Option (A) 1

Jim can do 2 houses in 1 day and Jim can 3/2 = 1.5 houses in 1 day. So working together, Jim & Peter can paint 2 + 1.5 = 3.5 houses in 1 day. Eliminate (A)

Option (B) 2
Jim can do 2 houses in a day, so for two days he can do 4 houses, and Jim can do 3 houses for two days. Working together, Jim & Peter can paint 4 + 3 = 7 houses in 2 days.

Answer is B

Since Jim can paint 2 houses in 1 day and Peter can paint 3 houses in 2 days, Jim’s rate is 2 and Peter’s rate is 3/2. We need to determine how long it will take them to paint 7 houses when working together. If we let t = the number of days it takes them working together, we can create the following equation and determine t:

2t + (3/2)t = 7

Multiplying the entire equation by 2, we have:

4t + 3t = 14

7t = 14

t = 2

Solution

    • Jim can paint 2 houses in one day.
      o Thus, in 2 days, Jim can paint 4 houses.
    • Peter can paint 3 house in 2 days.
    • We want to paint 7 houses.
      o And we can see clearly that if they work together for 2 days, they can paint (4 +3) = 7 houses.
      o Hence, correct answer is Option B.
