Hi,
I am currently working at a multinational consulting firm in the U.S. and planning to transfer to the Hong Kong office within the same company next month.
My current title is "Consultant", which is an entry-level position in the U.S. division. I have received an offer from a different branch within the same company in Hong Kong but they've offered me a position of "Associate". They are saying even though they are the same company, the organization structure in the APAC region is different. Their entry level position is "Associate" and then goes up to "Consultant", "Senior Consultant", etc.
I like the type of work they do in Hong Kong but my concern is this might seem like a demotion. For example, my current title is "Consultant" and if I transfer to the Hong Kong office, I will be an Associate. Even if I get a promotion in the future, I will be promoted to "Consultant", which is my current title. I am concerned that this might look really bad on my resume when I apply for top MBA programs in the near future.
I really wish I could keep my current job in the States, but I am not a U.S. citizen and my work visa expires in a month so I have no choice. Is this something I can explain to admission officers or would it raise a flag? I tired to negotiate on the job title but they said "Consultant" in Hong Kong requires at least 2 years of work experience and I only have about 10 months. That's why they are offering their entry-level position, which is "Associate".
If I take this job and get promoted next year, it would be like Consultant(U.S.) - Associate (HK) - Consultant (HK) within the same company on my resume. I wonder if it is going to hurt my chance to get into top MBA programs because they care about how quickly you move up.
