John buys nails from a wholesale hardware dealer at the rate of Rs 100 per kg, during which he uses his own false weights to count 1250g instead of 1 kg. Also, while selling at the same price, he again cheats a shopkeeper by selling only 800g instead of 1 kg. What is the overall profit for John (in Rs per kg)?
--> Using false weights, his cost price has decreased from INR 100/kg to INR 80/kg [INR 100/1.25 kg].
He sells at the same price of INR 100/kg, however using false weights again, he sells only 800g. Thus, his selling price has gone up from INR 100/kg to INR 125/kg [INR 100/0.80kg].
While in total terms, he has only recouped his investment, he still has 0.450 kg left with him, for which he has paid not a single paisa. He has practically gained the cost of this 0.45 kg,
i.e. INR 80/kg [his original cost price] x 0.450 kg = INR 36.
Thus, answer IMO = D.
