John's present age is one fourth of his father's age two years ago. John's father's age will be twice Raman's age after 10 years. If Raman's 12th birthday was celebrated 2 years ago, then what is John's present age?
A. 5 years
B. 7 years
C. 9 years
D. 11 years
E. 12 years
My instinct is to set up an algebraic equation or two AND the answer choices are just numbers. When both of those things are true, the odds are very good that I can get to the right answer at least as quickly and with very little risk of a silly mistake using Plugging In The Answers (PITA). I like trying B and D.
B: John is 7. His father was 28 two years ago, so his father is 30 today. In ten years, father will be 40 and Raman will be 20. So Raman is 10 today. But Raman's 12th birthday was two years ago, so Raman is 14 today. 10<14.
D: John is 11. His father was 44 two years ago, so his father is 54 today. In ten years, father will be 64 and Raman will be 32. So Raman is 22 today. But Raman's 12th birthday was two years ago, so Raman is 14 today. 22>14.
We were too low with B and too high with D. We need something between them. Only one answer choice is between B and D.
Answer choice C.
