I also got the answer as 26. is it not the correct answer?

Hi,

You have to find out the distance b/w R and the diner, which is 26(value of x) minus 2 ie D

Jonna and Russell meet at a diner that is directly south of Jonna's house and directly west of Russell's house. If the diner is exactly 10 miles from Jonna's house and Russell's house is 2 miles closer to the diner than to Jonna's house, how far apart is Russell's house from the diner?

A. 8

B. 14

C. 16

D. 24

E. 26

Someone please help me out here. I don't know if I'm missing something obvious or not but if the Question says that Russell's house is literally 2 miles closer to the diner then wouldn't Russell's house just be 10m-2m=8m? away from the diner? What am I missing?? This is driving me crazy

Hi,

2 miles closer to the diner than to Jonna's house
This implies that-
The distance between the Diner and Jonna is 10
The distance between the Diner and Russel is x(assume)
The distance between the Russel and Jonna is x+2

Now, just use pythagorus theorem to get the value of x.

I also just realized I misread the question...." 2 miles closer to the diner than to Jonna's house" thank you!

Oh, I made the same mistake of misreading the problem: also thought that 10-2=8, which is the distance from Russel to the diner.
