461. Judge Forer recognizes that the American judicial system provides more safeguards for accused persons than does the legal system of any other country, but she believes there is a great disparity between the systems of justice accorded rich and poor.

(A) for accused persons than does the legal system of any other country
(B) to accused persons as the legal system of any country
(C) for accused persons as the legal system of any country
(D) to accused persons as the legal system of any other country
(E) for accused persons than the legal system of any country

Please explain

We need to compare safeguards hence (A) is the only choice which compares using "does" .Rest are comparing countrie witrh safeg
uards hence IMO(A)

OA is A.

But please explain why the usage of an ellipsis in E is incorrect.
for accused persons than (does) the legal system of any country

Here an ellipsis could be used, thus eliminating "does" can be valid.

Anyone?

Hi!
I agree with A, but I dont find nothing wrong with E. It is actually a perfect example of ellipsis.
Could anybody shed some light?
Thanks.

E might be interpreted to mean that American judicial system is a provider of two things for the accused persons: 1. safeguards 2. The legal system of any other country and that in Forer’s case, she recognizes that the system provides more safeguards than the legal system. That is the reason why, the verb – does – is required before the legal system to break the misreading.

B, C, D are out for obvious reasons- non underlined portion has "More" so we must have "than" somewhere. Left with A, E- in E we seem to compare other countries legal system with something done by USA's legal system. Here "Does" comes handy as in A!

(E) says legal system than any country. This also includes the US. Hence, we require the word "other" as in any other country to convey the right meaning.
This is present in option (A)

(A) for accused persons than does the legal system of any other country

(B) to accused persons as the legal system of any country

(C) for accused persons as the legal system of any country

(D) to accused persons as the legal system of any other country

(E) for accused persons than the legal system of any country

On first read A seems fine.

Then you go on and find all the highlighted errors.

So A is the best comparison and meaning.

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

businessm
Judge Forer recognizes that the American judicial system provides more safeguards for accused persons than does the legal system of any other country, but she believes there is a great disparity between the systems of justice accorded rich and poor.

(A) for accused persons than does the legal system of any other country

(B) to accused persons as the legal system of any country

(C) for accused persons as the legal system of any country

(D) to accused persons as the legal system of any other country

(E) for accused persons than the legal system of any country

Choice A: Option A, by including the verb "does" compares the number of safeguards provided by the American judicial system to the number of safeguards provided by judicial systems of other countries; in this manner, Option A preserves the intended meaning of the sentence. Moreover, Option A maintains correct idiom usage throughout the sentence. Thus, Option A is correct.

Choice B: Option B utilizes an unidiomatic phrase "to accused persons"; the correct form of this phrase is "for accused persons". Thus, Option B is incorrect.

Choice C: Option C incorrectly compares "safeguards" to "the legal system of any country". Thus, Option C is incorrect.

Choice D: Option D repeats the idiom-related error that Option B displays. Moreover, this answer choice's use of the word "other" is redundant as it is clear from the context that “any country” implies countries other than America. Thus, Option D is incorrect.

Choice E: Option E repeats the error seen in Option C. Thus, Option E is incorrect.

Hence, A is the best answer choice.

All the best!

shivbits42,
as about "But please explain why the usage of an ellipsis in E is incorrect."

We need to pay attention to the difference between "the legal system of any other country" and "the legal system of any country".

We need "other" to exclude the US, otherwise, we have nonsensical meaning, in which we compare the system in US with the system in all countries, including US.

For this simple reason, we can quickly eliminate not just E but B and C.
