Because a normal year consists of 52 weeks and 1 day (365 days)
When you have a leap year of 366 days, then it is 52 weeks and 2 days but you need to be careful about dates before and after Feb 29 bacause they would different patterns when crossing the leap year.

Look at the calendar from any non-leap years, the same date always falls on the subsequent day of the week, so June 25th becomes Sat in 74' and Sun on 75'. But when it falls on a leap year, you have to advance by two days.

Hope this helps.

There are 365 days in a non leap year. There are 7 days in a week. Dividing 365 / 7 gives the remainder as 1. So if a 25-Jun-1973 is friday, then 25-Jun-1974 will fall on saturday, and for 1975 on sunday. Since 1976 is a leap year, dividing 366 / 7 gives remainder 2. Adding 2 to sunday will make it tuesday in '76, wednesday in 77, thursday in 1978 and friday in 1979.

Thanks
Sreeni
