Just as to break a sentence into clauses and phrases helps the student understand the intended meaning so using the correct grammatical construction helps the student express meaning clearly and concisely.
A few general hints about English usage before we delve.
Break or breaking is different from a breakdown or breaking up.
Break or breaking is just to turn into smaller pieces, mostly used in physical actions such as broke the glassware, etc.
Break up is a phrasal verb, meaning the stoppage of something that was going on normally, such as in a break up of a relationship, friendship, or the break up of a long-held custom, etc. In such times, things may be mostly abstract rather physical though the difference is rather thin.
A breakdown is, however, is totally different in the sense it refers to the act of failing to function.
A) to break a sentence – The infinitive phrase is not parallel to the gerund ‘using’
B) breaking a sentence --- The correct choice.
C) the sentence’s breakdown –eliminate as per the points explained above.
D) the breakdown of a sentence – Same as in C.
E) breaking up of a sentence –‘breaking up of’ is not parallel to the simple gerund ‘using’. You can note the subtle difference in the meaning, hence not correct.
