according to mgmat sc, you shouldn't use past perfect when you don't have to. I don't think it is needed here, because you are not trying to establish two different points in a timeline. Does domeone agree on this?

B seems parallel in that all tenses are in past perfect. So I'm confused.

Between A and B, I eliminated (B) because I did not like the use of 'The fact' which is redundant.

Just because King Alfred occupied and fortified London in 886 did not mean that he also won the loyalty of its citizens: the invading Danes were well aware of this weakness and used it to their advantage in 893 .

A. Just because King Alfred occupied and fortified London in 886 did not mean that he

B. The fact that King Alfred had occupied and fortified London in 886 did not mean that he had

C. Just because King Alfred occupied and fortified London in 886, it did not mean he

D. The fact that King Alfred occupied and fortified London in 886, it did not mean that he

E. Just because King Alfred had occupied and fortified London in 886, it did not mean he

A misses an "it". The sentence would have been right if it were Just because King Alfred occupied and fortified London in 886 it did not mean that he
C misses a "that". Just because King Alfred occupied and fortified London in 886, it did not mean that he ........."would have been correct
E has the same problem as C

D has an unnecessary "it"

B seems to have a redundant "had" at the end BUT it still gramatically sound. "did not mean that he had also wont he loyalty..." the past perfect tense is not wrong.

B is the answer
