Why do people say that they "gave" or "write" their GMATs instead of just using the word "took?"
I don't think I've seen any instance of someone saying that they took the exam (specify time here).

Where did this come from?

I think the proper term is "took"

"gave" and "wrote" seems to be the terminology used by applicants from several Asian countries
"passed" seems to be used by applicants from Eastern Europe


All of them imply the same thing, but I think the proper phrase is "to take a test." Other opinions?

It's used commonly in some formerly British colonized countries and Asian countries, as bb pointed out. Just a different colloquialism in a different form of English. American English is it's own language, lol. They don't follow the English rules from Britain, incidentally. Just a random FYI :).
