I just finished my first try at GMAT and am quite disappointed. I ended up with a 650 Q44 V34

This is quite a bit lower then all my practice exams

Kaplan CAT 1 600
-before really studying
GMAT Prep 1a Q46 V40 690
Powerprep 1 Q47 V40 700
GMAT Prep 1b Q48 V40 710
GMAT Prep 2a Q47 V41 710 only a few days ago

I was targeting a 700 and felt I was there and then this happened. I guess it's back to the drawing board.
Is this normal? What are you thoughts? Should I retake? How long should I wait?

Perhaps the greatest disappointment is that I can't apply to schools in the first round. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Sorry to hear that. It's more normal than you think. Read other similar experiences, look into your own preparation and your results, and see what you should improve. Funnily I blogged about this just today - repeat GMATs - because it's pretty common.

Well, after a day to digust the score, I'm doing better. While 650 was a disappointment, it still puts me in reach of some possible schools I'm interested in such as Notre Dame, Minnesota, etc. Also, I've also decided that such a score has been good for me as I've been forced to reevaluate if I truely want to get my MBA.

After some thinking, I am planning on retaking the GMAT in Nov. and then applying to schools in January. I also will be puchasing OG 11 and using that as my main studying tool. Any other advice?

Finally, how do schools view one's second GMAT score? Does taking the GMAT twice hurt one's chances at getting into a higher ranked school?

I think 650 is plenty good for ND and Minn. As for retaking, don't worry. Three times seem to be the limit, but bschools only look at top score. Just maintain your studies with some nightly exercises and you should be okay in Nov. Good luck.

650 is not that bad, cheer up.

Well my order is

Kellogg (Dream School)
Chicago (not sure if I'd even apply)
Michigan
North Carolina
Notre Dame

I have a 3.95 GPA in Political Science from a private liberal arts college. My work experience is in the non-profit arena and I will play that up to schools as a way to differentiate myself from other candidates.

My one hope for a better score is I didn't look at OG and I think that really tripped me up on my verbal. I plan to start studying again this weekend and still shoot for 700.

Correct to a point. There actually is no limit as to the number of times one can take the test over the course of their lifetime. According to PVue, four times is the max in any given calender year, and one can't retake it for five years if he/she cracks an 800.

I know this because I have a friend at Emory right now that took the test 8 times (four times in 05 and four times in 06). Incidentally, she applied with her highest score and was accepted.

Another point, virtually all schools do not average scores. They do however see the most recent five scores within the last five years at the time they receive an applicant's score report.

If this policy weren't in effect, many testakers would simply give up on MBA school after their third attempt, provided they failed to reach their target score (something that happened to me two weeks ago.)

As mike said, "Keep your head up!" :lol:

Also, I'd like to say that though 650 is not a bad score, should you want to go for it again, I'd advise you to now stick to a sniper approach rather than a shotgun approach.

i.e. Recognize and target specific weaknesses, rather than keep preparing blindly for each and every topic. I'm damn sure you are going to make it!
