KAPLAN Practice Test scores [#permalink]

Hi everyone, I have my GMAT on June 25. I gave a KAPLAN test on Monday and I scored 520 (Q31, V24). I want to get my score in the 700 range. With the help of the error log, I figured out that in Quant, my main reason for getting a low score is that I made silly mistakes. To correct that, I practiced 50 PS and 40 DS questions from the O.G yesterday. In Verbal, I am currently using the MGMAT SC for Sentence Correction. I am using the Kaplan Strategy and a strategy outlined in this forum for CR. For the RC, I am using the strategy outlined in the Kaplan Premier 2010-2011 book. My main question is: I believe that I can turn it around in 16 days. What should my steps be? I really would love to get a hang of the verbal. Should I practice more? Any suggestions? Thank you, -Harsh.

Hi Not sure I got this right, but are expecting to go from 520 to 700 in 16 days?! If yes, I would strongly allow yourself much more time, it isn't an easy task... I started 10 months ago with 520, and have now reached 680, I estimate that will take me another 2 month to get my 710 goal. Although, you can definitely improve faster than I did, I just think that 16 days is very unrealistic. Check out post on this forum from people outlining their strategy to improve their score. Kaplan scores are quite understated. I got 590 on Kaplan but 760 on GMATPrep, both taken on the same day. I don't think you should worry about trying to get over 700 on kaplan. Maybe it's better for you to focus on improving other CAT scores.

Woahhhhhhhhhhhhh 590 on Kaplan and 760 on GMATPrep. And if I am not wrong, GMATPrep is the closest estimator to your actual GMAT score. Wow. zestzorb, thank you so much for giving me this hope. Also, do let me know how you did in your actual GMAT. Good luck to you mate. When is your GMAT?

The discrepancy between both scores is accountable to the verbal part. I got Q48,V28 on Kaplan and Q51,V42 on GMATprep. The quants parts are pretty much the same but I think Kaplan's verbal questions are way harder than GMATPrep's, which are the real exam questions. So if I were you I'd try to build up the quants. I am going to take it this August or maybe September. Good luck to you as well.

It's almost one year already. In the end I got 760 on the real exam.

Although our tests don't produce perfect results (without access to the GMAC's technology, NO practice test is), I can assure you that a 100 point difference is a big exaggeration; I see as many people complaining that our tests are too easy as I see claiming they are too hard! e1s, remember, practice tests are PRACTICE. There are a number of reasons that can explain the discrepency. Admittedly, an imperfect algorithm may account for a few of those points, but anything from improved confidence to lack of focus to using a new technique could explain a rapid increase in score over the course of a students' prep. Hope this helps!

710 in GMATPrep, 710 in Knewton, and then, 640 in KAPLAN. It was a shocker for me! Any idea what could be my actual GMAT score? I have it on 27th June 2011.

However, it doesn't need to be. It's meant to familiarize new students with the test and to help students realize what subject areas they are struggling in--there isn't much point to a perfectly accurate score when most students taking the free test are going in cold!

As I said, best measure is the MBA.com GMAT prep tests. I finally got 740 (Q50, V40) in real GMAT! And this KAPLAN test was within 7 days of my real GMAT. So, surely I couldn't have improved a lot over a week! While the KAPLAN test was helpful, I still see no reason for demoralizing the students with such a low score. A difference of 100 points is no way justified. But then again, probably KAPLAN gives you a low score so that they can fulfill the money-back guarantee that they'll increase your GMAT score by a huge number if you take their course. But, Knewton also promises a 50 point increase or money-back guarantee and there I scored 710. So, I'm not sure of the business strategy of KAPLAN!! However, I would agree with KapTeacherEli that GMATPrep is the best indicator of your GMAT scores.

Hi Friends...Got 520 on the first of the four Kaplan tests...My view - hard questions and no "Adaptive" part in the complete test...But good for practice anyways...planning to enroll for MGMAT tests..and yes, all the best to the fellow friends preparing for GMAT and congrats to the ones who made it!!!
