Yes, Kellogg has already begun admitting candidates to its January 2018 EMBA programs! So, if you are thinking about starting a great EMBA program soon, prepare to get mobilized.
The Kellogg EMBA program continues to grow in popularity. It has established a wonderful reputation for excellent faculty and highly accomplished students. The EMBA is greatly valued among executives given its flexibility to cater to the time demands that the successful executive faces, while also offering a world-class MBA education, a dynamic learning environment and a first-rate alumni network. The Kellogg EMBA program is a top-5 U.S. EMBA program. With only 60-70 seats available for the Evanston class and 40-50 seats available for the Miami class, competition can be keen!
So, is it important to apply before or near the Round 1 (August 2017) deadline? Yes, in some cases.
Because admissions at Kellogg are rolling – meaning, applications are reviewed as soon as they are received by the admissions committee – timing can be key. If you are an overrepresented candidate, such as a foreign national male candidate from East Asia, an American male candidate of Indian descent, or an engineer, the sooner you apply the better. This is because the business schools seek balance and diversity among the EMBA students, and therefore they will keep an eye on the numbers of overrepresented candidates (candidates from a pool/profile in which there are a lot of highly qualified applicants) admitted. The later you apply in a rolling admissions cycle, the more seats will already have been offered to candidates from overrepresented pools, and hence your quest for gaining admission will be harder.
Similarly, if you have a weakness to override, such as a less-than-ideal college GPA, the earlier you press “submit”, the more seats will still be available, and hence you have better odds for overcoming that GPA to gain admission. If you apply near the final deadline, you will make it harder to override a weakness like that.
The same reasoning holds true if you have other notable weaknesses, such as a gap in work experience, disjointed work experience, a layoff at some point in your career, or a lack of promotions.
There are plenty of candidates who gain admission to Kellogg late in the rolling admissions cycle, so if there are some circumstances that might delay your submission, don’t completely despair. It is simply the case, though, that it is best practice to apply as early as you can so as to maximize your odds of success.
