Kellogg EMBA: How Important to Apply Before Round 1 Deadline (April)?EMBA programs have gained great popularity in the last few years, given their flexibility to cater to the time constraints of the successful executive while delivering a world-class MBA education and providing students with the resources and alumni network of a world-class institution. Most rankings place the Kellogg EMBA program in the top-5 of all U.S. EMBA programs. But, with only 60-70 seats available for the Evanston class and 40-50 seats available for the Miami class, competition can be keen!
So, is it important to apply before or near the Round 1 (April) deadline? Yes, in some cases.
Because admissions at Kellogg are rolling – meaning, applications are reviewed as soon as they are received by the admissions committee – timing can be key. If you have a notable weakness to override, such as a low undergraduate GPA, the earlier you apply, the more seats are still available, and hence your odds of overriding that low GPAT are higher. If you apply near the final deadline in June, you will make harder your attempt to override a weakness like a low GPA.
The same reasoning holds true if you have other notable weaknesses, such as a gap in work experience, disjointed work experience, a layoff at some point in your career, or a lack of promotions in your career.
If you are an overrepresented candidate, such as a foreign national male candidate from India or East Asia, an American male candidate of Indian or East Asian descent, or an engineer, the sooner you apply the better. This is because the business schools seek balance and diversity of students, and therefore will keep an eye on the numbers of overrepresented candidates (candidates from a pool/profile in which there are a lot of highly qualified applicants) admitted. The later you apply in a rolling admissions cycle, the more seats will already have been given out to candidates from overrepresented pools, and hence your quest for gaining admission will be harder.
This is not to say that you cannot achieve success late in a rolling admissions cycle. But, to the extent you are able to apply earlier so as to maximize your odds of success, you should strive to do so.
