Hey all,
I am extremely grateful to have this choice...I've been offered a full-tuition merit scholarship and membership in the Vetter Dean's Fellows Program at UNC and I've been accepted at UT Austin with a 35k / year offer. I've reached out to McCombs to start the negotiation process and in the meantime I'm weighing my options. I look to found a HealthTech Software company during/post MBA and my plan B is Product Management at a large tech company.
Option 1: Take the full ride at Kenan-Flagler. Main pros: Extraordinarily warm & welcoming people during my visit; Healthcare ties / strength; Vetter Dean's distinguishment (not sure how important, especially if I go the entre route); Network is more nation-wide per employment reports; closer to my family on East Coast. (direct flights are cheap and take fewer than 2 hours).
Option 2: Take the 35k / year at McCombs. Main pros: Tech / Entre strength of program and Austin; 4-year post MBA salary is higher per Forbes (again, not sure how important from an entre standpoint); No state income tax if I stay in Texas; Arguably nicer weather (I enjoy the heat, but I've never experienced Texas summer)
Option 3: Take the 35k / year at McCombs & cover remaining expense with Employer Sponsorship: My employer (mid-size manufacturing company that I do internal tech consulting for) just offered me the opportunity to work 10-15 hours/week during the program and then stay with my company for 3 years post MBA. I could work remotely during this entire duration. Upon returning full-time I would essentially run a manufacturing consulting department that would leverage the tools / reports that we've been building over the last several years. Main pros are reduced debt burden; guaranteed employment outcome; and ability to snow-bird (Family on East Coast in Summer, Austin rest of year). Main con here is my salary wouldn't be as high as the MEAN salary post MBA (probably more like 100k rather than 120-130k), which I'm afraid could have a compounding effect on my future earnings potential, but again not that crucial if I'm going into entre and could set me up super well to start my own business.
Thank you so much for your time. Looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback to assist me in making this extremely challenging decision!
