Question:
The following appeared in a report presented for discussion at a meeting of the directors of a company that manufactures parts for heavy machinery.
“The falling revenues that the company is experiencing coincide with delays in manufacturing. These delays, in turn, are due in large part to poor planning in purchasing metals. Consider further that the manager of the department that handles purchasing of raw materials has an excellent background in general business, psychology, and sociology, but knows little about the properties of metals. The company should, therefore, move the purchasing manager to the sales department and bring in a scientist from the research division to be manager of the purchasing department.”
Discuss how well reasoned... etc.
Essay:
Author recommends that company should replace its existing purchasing manager with a scientist. To support his suggestion, Author claims that the fall in revenue is partly because of delay in manufacturing. Author further states that these delays in manufacturing are because the existing purchasing manager lacks the knowledge of metal properties. Stated in this way the argument fails to mention several key factors, on the basis of which it could be evaluated. In addition, conclusion presented by author without demur relies on assumption for which there are no further evidence. Hence, the argument is rather weak, unconvincing, and has palpable fallacies.
First, Author states that as decrease in revenues coincide with delays in manufacturing, these manufacturing delays are in part responsible for fall in revenues. However, author has not provided any evidence to suggest that this is in indeed the case. For example, Problems such as a faulty machine which can halt production, or because of general market condition increasing number of clients are holding back payments could also decrease the revenues.
Second, Author argues that although current manager of the purchasing department is skillful in general business, psychology, and sociology, he is responsible for the delays in manufacturing as he lacks knowledge of properties of metals. However, author has failed to provide evidence to his claim that poor planning in purchasing metals is due to lack of knowledge only and not because of other unfavorable factors. Perhaps shippment was not fullfilled because of shortage in inventory at supplier side. Furthermore, Author also did not address that knowing about properties of metals is a sole parameter needed to succeed as a manager of purchasing raw material department. Author would also have to demonstrate that scientist is reasonably prepared to succeed as manager of the department.
In conclusion, Author suggestion may appear plausible at first but upon close inspection suffers with reasonable flaws that must be addressed before taking any action. To support his conclusion, Author should also present evidence to support the claim that indeed lack of knowledge of properties of metal is indeed the main driver of poor planning. Also, to strengthen the recommendation, author would have to demonstrate that delays in manufacturing were indeed the reason of falling revenues.
