Question:
The following appeared as part of an article reviewing summer camps for children.
Parents, if you need a summer camp for your children look no further than Federville Farms. In a recent survey, Federville Farms ranked first in both overall camper satisfaction and in food quality, and second in the variety of outdoor activities. Federville Farms has been family owned and operated for over forty years, so you have nothing to worry about when it comes to your child's safety, and it employs more Red Cross certified lifeguards than any other camp in the state. If you seek the best camp experience for your children, Federville Farms is the best choice you can make.
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
My response:
The above argument is flawed because it lacks information vital for the proper evaluation of the situation at hand.
Firstly, the argument suggests that the Federville farms is a good choice for summer camps for children citing the results from a recent survey in which Federville ranked well. However, the name and source of the survey have not been mentioned. Hence, there is no way to verify the authenticity of the results. Additionally, the argument must provide other basis apart from food quality and outdoor activities against which Federville can be compared with other farms. Even if just these two parameters were assumed to be enough for comparison, the argument has not provided enough information regarding these parameters. One must know what exactly constitutes good food quality and what are the various outdoor activities that are being offered. Are the activities safe for children to indulge in? And are these at par with the activities being offered elsewhere. If they are different and interesting, then in what way and why must one choose Federville over another farm if it is offering essentially the same activities.
The argument also seems to suggest that the long time period of forty years for which the farm has been in operation, is in itself a good reason for guarantee of safety for children. This claim must be supported by more information regarding the steps that the farm has taken to ensure the safety of children.Although the argument does mention that Federville employs more Red Cross lifeguards than any other camp, it is not in itself a guarantee that all safety requirements are being adhered to. More information about the requirements enforcable by the law and how Federville is meeting them should be provided to satisfy the safety concerns of parents. In fact , one might be led into thinking that maybe the farm is more risky and unsafe for children because it to hires more lifeguards than other farms do.
Thirdly, to make the camp seem more appealing a choice for parents, the argument must also mention the any previous accolades won by the farm other than just the results of an unknown survey, to add credibility to the forty year old farm. Perhaps reviews from parents from previous camps must also be published to make the argument sound more personal and compelling and in favor of Federville Farms. Lastly, the fee payable by parents, an essential component in decision making, has not been mentioned. There is no way to compare how economically viable an option Federville Farms is when compared with other farms in its category. If the fees is comparable or lower, it might strengthen the case in favor of Federville farms versus its rivals.
To summarize, the source of the survey and its results and other vital information regarding safety and security of children in addition to the fee structure and time of stay and details of activities being offered are vital to know whether Federville Farms has actually a compelling case and is in fact a better choice than other farms as a summer camp choice.
Kindly rate and let me know the weak areas!
Thanks a million!!!:))))
