I need advice on my personal statement. I've got a draft down but I'm not too confident about it. Please review it and comment on any mistakes that I made. Thanks
My first experience running a business is helping my family sell cakes when I was twelve years old. Back then, I was intrigued at the machinations of trade. Ten years onwards, that fascination has blossomed into a passion for entrepreneurship. It is my desire to study the workings of an enterprise and use the knowledge to expand my family business.
For me, an entrepreneur is an innovator. He must be willing to accept and implement new ideas and formulate new strategies in order to gain an edge over his competitors. I'd like to think of myself as an innovator and have worked on several innovation projects. In school, my team garnered third place in the National Science Fair for designing and manufacturing an antibacterial cooking pot. I fabricated a commercial fiber laser in my final year of university - compressing a room-sized configuration into a single handheld device. Currently a friend in Canada and I are working on a low-emission, low-noise lawnmower. All my projects have been challenging, but fun and have often tested the limits of my resourcefulness and creativity. I look forward to undertake more projects in the future.
Possessing boundless energy and enthusiasm, I often find myself participating in sports. An avid fan of basketball, I played for my residential college in university. Prior to that, I was a member of my school rugby team, competing in several tournaments throughout the country. Being active in sports molded me into a team player, valuing teamwork and cohesion to achieve a goal.
The energy I have was also channeled into debate. I was the captain of my school team in my final year. I attribute my growth as a leader to debating. To be an effective leader, I learnt to not crumble under pressure and become a steadying influence. Debating has also made me more expressive of my views, allowing me to attain confidence and eloquence in speech.
Passion and effort go hand-in-hand. They spur me to explore new things and open my mind to different possibilities. My passion for music led me to teach myself the guitar and I practice daily, hoping to replicate the sounds of Led Zeppelin. Similarly, watching Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen spurred me to experiment in the kitchen. Oftentimes I would impress my friends and family by cooking them a meal. Cooking and playing guitar are the culmination of my passion and hard work. I believe that if there is something you like to do, you should try your best to be good at it.
Growing up in a close-knit community, I learned to appreciate the value of working as a collective. Whenever a special occasion arises, the whole neighborhood will contribute in whatever way they can. It doesn't matter how tenuous the task, everyone works together in tandem so that everything runs smoothly. Such instances have molded my current mentality - to pull my own weight and do everything possible to complete a task.
An education in entrepreneurship is a big step in fulfilling my dream to become an entrepreneur. With much enthusiasm and excitement, I hope to spend the next few years contributing to a university community.
