Hi ally510,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hello everyone,
I took the GMAT exam last month and scored 620. It was not the score that I expected. I had been doing well in quant section in mock tests, scoring 47, 48. But on the test day I got nervous and could not finish all the questions in time. i guessed around 6 questions in the end and did not mark last 2 or 3 questions - as far as I remember - I was so panicked to be honest. On the other hand, i was not scoring well in the verbal section in the mocks, scoring anywhere between 28 and 33 (I am not good with CR and RC). But on test day I did just fine and got 35. Again the issue was guessing last few questions. Although I did mark all the questions.
I did plan on applying with this score but I don't feel that this is the best score I can get. I did prepare all the basics well ,but I have timing issues and I get nervous and my strategies are not the best. So I thought to give myself some time before the next attempt and work on all the issues to score around 710. I don't know if I can improve by ~100 points in 7 weeks time but I want to try my best.
Kindly suggest me how I can improve and do better; I would really appreciate it. :)

Hi! Sad to hear about your experience. Definitely, you will make it a point that you will not miss marking questions in your next attempt even if you have to do so randomly due to time constraints. Having said that you don't have to get a 100 points improvement and put lots of pressure on yourself. If I consider your best quant score and verbal score a Q48, V35 translates into 670. Therefore you have to try to be at your best in your next attempt. Now come to the point of improving on your weaknesses: You know the basics. All you need to do is practice well and improve on your timing. Along the way, if you could improve on other weak areas as well then that will further help your score.

All the best!

Hello ally510,

A score of 620 is decent and a target score of 710 seems realistic.

Also, I fully understand your frustration because, with my GMAT tutoring, guidance, and counseling experience, we have to accept a fact with a pinch of salt that diagnostic/ mock test scores are above then what one should expect in a real test. There is often dropping in the score. Some students have even experienced a drop of 100 pointers. It is one of the realities, and your preparation should not sideline this fact.

A couple of things that can be a noticeable barrier to your scores would be some or all of the below.

• Inefficiency by using time-consuming Conventional method to tackle DS and PS questions still
• No expert support (maybe) who can tutor, analyze, and guide you during your learning especially on hard level questions while stably hitting middle-level questions.
• Lack of many updated questions and practice in the recent exam trend
• Not well aligned with time to solve questions.

We would recommend you make a note of various possible combinations of your target score. The possible scores will help you track your performance after taking the mock or practice test. It will also help you maintain balance in both the sections, and you will always be in a great position to allot the study hours to a specific area accordingly.

The possible score combinations for 700 or 700+: Q should be Q 46, 47, 48, and V should be V38, 39, 40.

You can try our free diagnostic test and receive a comprehensive study guide by topic. receive. This test will clearly help you understand your weak areas.

You can schedule a Free counseling session for 20 mins with one of our experts:https://calendly.com/mathrevolution/1-on-1-session for detailed advice on your current study plans.

You must schedule your day smartly to revise the topics and also practice more questions. We would suggest you register with MathRevolution https://www.mathrevolution.com/member/signup to get access to our 7-day full on-demand course (27 topics, 490 subtopics, and 1,500 questions) for free trial lessons. 700+ level questions https://www.mathrevolution.com/gmat/questionbank are separately available, too.

Since we are a math expert, we will recommend you go through our post on the GMAT club: Breakdown of GMAT math questions and types: https://gmatclub.com/forum/overview-of- ... l#p1641411

Regular tests will reflect the positive change in the score, and hence, your confidence will boost up. Gradually, with the help of mock tests, you will be able to compete with time and hence will be able to learn time-management.

We appreciate your time and patience in reading this reply.

Hi ally510,

Sorry about how things went with your GMAT. Let me get straight to the point. Concepts alone don't help you get a good score on GMAT. It is a test of application of concepts. So, your strategies and methodologies have to be good. So, your focus should be on these things mostly. As you have already finished learning the concepts, I think you can improve your score to 710 if you put in good number of hours studying in 7 weeks.

The path ahead:

You just mentioned that you were struggling with time. Struggling with time is just a symptom. The actual problem is you are not using the best method to solve the question under two minutes. So, you have to learn the right strategies to solve the given question under optimum time that is 2 minutes.

And you might be struggling with a few topics - the struggle might be with the concepts or the application. So, you have to identify them first, make a study plan and then work on those areas. I mention study plan because you have a deadline coming. If you have weekly tasks to finish, then you will be clear
of what to study on any given day.

So, I suggest you to use a proper resource which can help you with the
  • strategies,
  • methodologies,
  • study plan,
  • questions to practice and their detailed solutions.

I emphasize on detailed solutions because most of your learning happens when you analyze the solutions of the questions, compare your approach and identify at which step you faltered. If you are open to suggestions, you can check out the GMATWhiz course. It helps you work on your weak areas by analyzing your performance and providing you with real time improvement modules such as additional videos and quizzes for a specific topic.

If you need any help with the study strategy or if you wish to have a detailed discussion regarding your weak areas and the study plan, you can get in touch with me using the below link.

Hi ally510,

An improvement is definitely possible, provided you do the prep in the right way. Understand the mistakes you have done previously and make sure you don't repeat them. It would be mostly the application part. So, get in touch with an expert or a mentor, choose the right resource which can help you with a study plan and the application.
