Solution to the question above;
Let N represent Nancy, J for Jane and K for Kate
Given that: last year, N = 2 x J
K = 3 x J
and K is given to be $45,000
Therefore, 45,000 = 3 x J
thus, J = 15,000
Remember, N = 2 x J
thus, N = 2 x 15,000 = 30,000
therefore, the average salary of the 3 women = (45,000 + 15,000 + 30,000)/3
= 90,000/3
= $30,000 answer choice D

This is a very simple question on equations and averages.
Let’s develop the variables, before we can draft the equation. Let the amounts of money earned by Nancy, Janet and Kate be N, J and K respectively.
Nancy earned twice the amount of money that Janet earned. Therefore, N = 2J. Let’s call this equation 1.
Kate earned three times the amount of money that Janet earned. Therefore, K = 3J. Let’s call this equation 2.
It’s given that K = $45000. Substituting this in equation 2, we can calculate J to be $15000. Substituting this value of J in equation 1, we have N = $30000.
Now, average salary of all the three women = \(\frac{Sum of their salaries}{3}\).
Therefore, the average salary = \(\frac{90000}{3}\) = 30000.
The correct answer is option D.
