Good day everyone,
I have been admitted to both of these programs and am attempting to decide which to attend. If anyone has any thoughts, please share them here. I currently work in sales and trading and also do economic analysis at a brokerage firm in Canada. I am a Canadian citizen. Within the next 9 months I plan to have completed both my CFA charter and FRM certification - both of which saw the level 3/part 2 exams delayed earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I would like to transition to investment management/hedge fund or private equity after graduation. After graduation I would like to work at least a few years in London. Possible move to the US afterwards – but I am flexible in this regard and could see myself settling down in London, UK permanently depending on the type of work I end up doing there after graduation.
LBS
Pros
+International focus on finance
+Customizable curriculum with a variety of electives to take across various disciplines (even outside finance)
+World class school and reputation (#1 for finance and top 10 worldwide business school overall)
+International alumni network
+New country and experience
+Have some family in London
+International student cohort is cool and provides a great learning experience
+Financial center (for now) of Europe
+Lots of opportunities for events and student activities on campus (Disclaimer: COVID-19...)
+London is a great global city with lots to do (although I have never been there)
Cons
-Higher cost of living
-Slightly higher tuition vs Rotman
-Far away from support system (family, friends, etc)
-No $$ offered from school (yet??)
-Must move from Canada to UK (during COVID...)
-Larger class (=~ 200)
University of Toronto (Rotman)
Pros
+I am in Canada, so Toronto is easier to relocate to
+In depth curriculum
+Many friends in Toronto
+Cheaper tuition
+$$ from school
+Flexible loans from Canadian banks with the school paying the interest until I graduate in 2 years
+Smaller class (=~40-50)
+Top business and finance school in Canada
+Highly regarded south of the border in USA
+Internationally known, but not nearly as much pull outside home region as LBS
+New city, but same country
Cons
-Curriculum has ZERO flexibility...fixed courses from start to end
-Not as much focus on extracurricular activities as I got from LBS
-Heard it’s a competitive environment at U of T
-Toronto is a very saturated market for financial services professionals
Please let me know what your thoughts are or if there is anything (pro or con for either school) that I am missing. 😊
