Leah wants to shrink her photos to fit a computer screen. Her photos currently have a width of 1,024 pixels and a height of 768 pixels. If she reduces the width to 800 pixels, then to what height, in pixels, must she reduce the photos to preserve the same ratio of width to height?
A. 1,066.7
B. 600
C. 576
D. 544
E. 500
As exact calculations look hard, we'll first try to approximate.
This is an |Alternative approach.
1024 : 800 is about 1000 : 800 = 10 : 8 = 5 : 4 = 1.2 This is a 20% reduction.
Since 20% of 768 is 0.2 * 768 = about 0.2 * 770 = 77 + 77 = 154, the answer is about 768 - 154 = 614.
So (B) is our answer.
If we want to verify our approximation we can estimate that 24/1000 = 2.5%, meaning that the real result should be about 2.5% lower than what we got. 614 * 2.5% = about 6 + 6 + 3 = 15 and 614 - 15 = about 600 as required.
