What's wrong with option A? Regarded can be used interchangeably with considered.

C) "as he considered himself an ally, not."
The sentence structure and meaning are best expressed using the conjunction "as" to introduce the clause explaining Joseph Brant's perspective. "Considered" is more appropriate in this context, indicating his personal viewpoint. Additionally, the phrase "an ally, not" effectively contrasts his identity as an ally with the role of a subject. Therefore, option (C) gives the most accurate and concise expression of the intended meaning.

(A) as he regarded himself an ally, not
(B) that he regarded himself to be an ally rather than
(C) as he considered himself an ally, not
(D) that he considered himself to be ally instead of
(E) as he considered himself as an ally rather than

Why is E wrong?
A and B are wrong, Understood.
C doesn't seem to be parallel
E seems to be parallel with as (E) as he considered himself as an ally rather than

This is because "consider" is a lone wolf when it comes to idioms and does not have a preposition attached to it.

Hello sanchitb23,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, Option E incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "consider as"; remember, the word "considered" does not require a conjunction or a helping word/phrase; “consider/considered” is always followed directly by the noun, and the similar word "regarded" must be followed by the conjunction "as"; correct usages: Jack is “considered a math genius” or Jack is “regarded as a math genius”.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
