BackgroundI first took the GMAT in February 2006 and scored a 650 (Q45, V35), which I used to gain admission into the MPA (MAcc) program at the University of Texas. Recently, as I contemplated applying to MBA programs, I knew the score would have to improve substantially to attain my goal of attending a top 10 program.
Materials UsedPreviously I used materials that, based on this site's reviews, were probably the worst materials you could buy, and I spent exactly one week preparing. This time, intent on devoting significant effort to obtaining a 700+ score, I invested in the 8 Manhattan Review GMAT guides, and the three official guides (maroon, blue, and green). I spent a couple of months working methodically through each of the 8 Manhattan Review GMAT guides, before beginning in earnest on practice problems.
Lessons LearnedA friend of mine gave me one, simple piece of advice that I want to share with you now -
ONLY use official GMAT verbal questions. By focusing on only official GMAT verbal questions, natural patterns to the answers appeared and I developed amazing consistency on the verbal questions - scoring over 95% on all official guide questions and V47 on both GMATPrep tests, culminating with a V46 on the real exam. It was almost a sixth sense.
This certainly is not to diminish the value of the Manhattan Review guides - which provided an amazing verbal foundation and corrected my worse verbal issue - over thinking "draw an inference"-type RC and CR questions.
Good luck to all those looking to improve their verbal scores!
