Hello,

I am considering getting a recommendation from the president of our family business and am wondering if it is a good idea. Here are the key considerations:

-I worked in the family business for 4.5 months after graduation but left for a marketing job
-I rejoined recently (after 4 years elsewhere) and have been back at the family business for 5.5 months by time of the submission of the MBA application (so cumulatively I've worked at the family business for 10 months)
-My direct supervisor at the family business is a relative so I cannot ask him to write me a recommendation letter
-The president is not a relative and is a professional hire. He knows me well and I interact with him almost every day
-The president is the only one senior to me who is not a relative
-My other recommendation letter will come from my direct supervisor at my previous job
-My post-MBA goal is to grow the family business

Would this be detrimental to my application?

Hi there,

No, this will not be detrimental...in fact, I think this is a great choice for a recommender. Although 10 months total is a bit on the low end, he should have a great perspective on your growth during those 4 years you were away, your most recent impact on the business, and most importantly the future potential he sees that you could bring to the business. It sounds like he knows you well, and hopefully is enthusiastic about writing the letter. I would plan to write a brief optional essay explaining why your current direct supervisor is not writing the letter but this will not be an issue for admissions.

Good luck!
Kate
