I am considering getting a recommendation from the president of our family business and am wondering if it is a good idea. Here are the key considerations:

-I worked in the family business for 4.5 months after graduation but left for a marketing job
-I rejoined recently (after 4 years elsewhere) and have been back at the family business for 5.5 months by time of the submission of the MBA application (so cumulatively I've worked at the family business for 10 months)
-My direct supervisor at the family business is a relative so I cannot ask him to write me a recommendation letter
-The president is not a relative and is a professional hire. He knows me well and I interact with him almost every day
-The president is the only one senior to me who is not a relative
-My other recommendation letter will come from my direct supervisor at my previous job
-My post-MBA goal is to grow the family business

Would this be detrimental to my application?

I think the president is a good choice (especially when combined with your direct supervisor at your previous job & especially given your goals). When it comes to LORs you want someone who has worked closely with you & can back up the praise with specific examples. It's not enough to just say how great you are, they need to PROVE it via examples. You also need someone who has given you constructive feedback at some point since most schools ask about that. Assuming the president can do both he sounds like a great choice! You can use the optional essay to explain why you are not asking your current supervisor at the family business. Good luck!
