So it's about that time I thank my recommendation writers with news of what program I will be attending... before that though, any suggestions on what to get for your recommenders? From my personal group of friends, I have received suggestions reflecting a wide range ($100 - $1,000 gifts)... so wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or good ideas.

$1,000 gifts? Holy moly!

I got my three the following:
-$60 to my boss' favourite garden centre, she's a big green thumb (6 references)
-$60 to my undergrad program head for a local cafe he always raves about (6 references)
-$50 to my other undergrad program head for the Keg because he lives in another province (3 references)

Great question! I got 2 of my 3 recommenders bottles of single malt whiskey. I knew they were both into whiskey and if you go to a specialty store, they usually have experts on hand that can help you settle on the right bottle based on what you're looking for and your price range. Both bottles were in the $70-$80 range.

My last recommender I took out to dinner and drinks. He was more of a peer (and not a whiskey fan), so it worked out pretty well. $1000 seems a bit unseemly, but to each their own!

Yeah, I was trying to keep it in the $50-100 range for mine. I'm buying mine a bottle of wine that is the same we drank over a special dinner a few years ago, a dinner gift certificate, and a thank you card.

I read the $1000 :shock: initially and had me worried that I was underspending.

$50-$100 seems to be pretty standard from talking to my classmates here. I bought my one recommender a nice bottle of wine that ran about $90, and my other recommender a framed autographed photo of Yogi Berra (he's a big NY Yankees fan) than ran me $80.
