B and D are wrong coz they compare " the hydrogen in the sun's core" with " any star"
C is wrong coz the thing " will expand" here is the Sun, not the hydrogen
As some posts in forum pointed out that we use " like" to compare thing to thing, "as" to compare manner to manner. I eliminate A this way.
Finally I pick E.
One cosmological fact for those who feel interested in: Normally white dwaft withdraw the mass from nearby red giant until its accumulative mass is 1.4 mass of the Sun's mass under the influence of gravitational force.
Most of us chose E.........
could someone explain me what the structure is?

1.What the function of " as "?
2.and what the subject of " would be" is
I really in doubt.
I discard A and C on the basis of the rules for like and as. B can also be discard because we expect kind of a noun after the comma and there is nothing sembling a noun. Between D and E I choose E. D doesn't have a verb. The instructory phrase doesn't make any sense.
