Like the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye, insects’ eyes depend on recording and comparing light intensities in three regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Meaning Analysis: The human eye and the insect eye have a color-discriminating apparatus that depends on recording and comparing light in three regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Sentence Structure:
Like (Comparison marker)
the color-discriminating apparatus (element 1 of comparison)
of the human eye (Prepositional phrase modifying previous noun "apparatus")
, insects’ eyes (Subject ; Second element of comparison)
depend (verb)
on recording (first element of parallelism list)
and (parallelism marker)
comparing light intensities (second element of parallelism list)
in three regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.(additional information about "recording" and "comparing" done by the insect eye)
Error Analysis:
(A) insects’ eyes depend on - Incorrect We have a comparison error out here. We are incorrectly comparing the "Apparatus of the human eye" to the "insect eye". We can either compare the "eye of a human" to the "eye of an insect" OR the "apparatus of the human eye" to the apparatus of the insect eye"
(B) an insect eye depends on - Incorrect. Same as (A)
(C) that of insects depend on the. Incorrect. The pronoun "that of" refers to the previous noun "apparatus" thus rectifying the comparison error. However, we now see a subject verb error. The singular subject "that" has a plural verb "depend". Moreover, I would prefer to have "that of an insects eye" OR "that of an insect's" because it is the "eye" that has the apparatus. Again, I believe it is just a preference
(D) that of an insect’s eye depends on. Correct. The comparison and the SV errors are both rectified.
(E) that of an insect’s is dependent on the - Incorrect. We have a well structured active voice in (D) So I wouldn't chose a Passive voice structure such as this one
Note - "That of an insect's" means "that of an insect's eye"
