A few more doubts. Isn't there meaning error in this sentence? Is the Earth gathering or Scientists gathering information? Isn't this a solid reason to reject correct option?

We know what 'gathering' is modifying. Earth cannot gather so certainly the scientists are doing it.
A problem occurs when there is a rational possibility of either working out.
Take the pizza out of the box and throw it away.
What is 'it'? Likely the box since we wouldn't want to throw the pizza away. But what if the pizza has gone bad and needs to be thrown away? Hence both are possible. This is a problem because the communication is ambiguous.
