Like their males counterparts, women scientists are above average in terms of intelligence and creativity, but unlike men or science, their female counterparts have had to work against the grain of occupational stereotyping to enter a "man's world.".
(A) their female couunterparts have had to work
(B) their problem is working
(C) one thing they have had to do is work
(D) the handicap women of science have had is work
(E) women of science have had to work
Why is the answer (E) and not (A) if in fact, the part in bold already violates the unlike vs. like comparison rule?
Please explain. Thanks

Reasoning for E:
noun phrase needs to come after men of science.
In original sentence whom does their refer to?

E too
"unlike men or science, their female counterparts have had to work"
when you use UNLIKE you have to be careful with the following words.
In that case you use UNLIKE to compare MEN or SCIENCE with something else. It can only be a noun. the pronoun THEIR is also not clear.
