Hi everyone,
I've been working on my applications over the past week and one area that has been of particular concern for me in my essays has been linking my career goals to a specific purpose.
I've worked as an analyst at a wealth manager for the past two years and have found my passion is using my creative/analytical skillsets to help drive business strategy. The division I work in is essentially a boutique within a global corporation and the environment is very entrepreneurial. I've also been exposed to several start-up environments through previous experiences (internship, short-term work with an alumni on developing the marketing for his start-up). I believe the entrepreneurial mindset is extremely valuable in driving innovative strategy in established corporations. I would like to develop and apply this approach in my career so that I can leverage it to drive a business unit's competitive and organizational positioning. I want an MBA to build my understanding of both business strategy and entrepreneurship to complement my finance background.
I'm interested in management consulting in the short term--targeting a role in business unit strategy at McKinsey & Co immediately following graduation. I see this as an extension of my MBA education as far as building out my strategic perspective/skillset. In the long term, I would like to work in internal strategic planning. I believe my ideal position would be a Director of Strategic Planning Innovation at Nike. It combines my interests in the business world (utilizing my creative/analytical skillsets and entrepreneurial focus to position an organization and drive) and personal interest in athletics, specifically running. However, I'm having trouble linking these to an ultimate purpose. My desire to work in the role is purely based on the fact that I find it interesting and believe I would very much enjoy the experience.
In short, my question is--
How crucial is it to have an ultimate "purpose" for my career goals? I don't have plans to change the world, at least in a specific way (not to say I don't want my work to be impactful). I just want to do what I enjoy. This is a point I've been struggling on in my essays.Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
