Little Johnny wants to enter a B-elementary school and he needs to pass a mini GMAT test. The test consists of 3 questions given in a row. The questions are scored according to their difficulty levels (1,2, or 3). Wrong answers score 0. The test starts with a question of dfficulty level 2. If answered correctly the difficulty level of the next question increases by 1, and decreases by 1 if answered incorrectly, and so on. Obviously there are no further increases for 3rd level questions if answered correctly, and decreases for 1st level questions if answered incorrectly. Little Johnny may get all the scores below EXCEPT

Little Johnny wants to enter a B-elementary school and he needs to pass a mini GMAT test. The test consists of 3 questions given in a row. My answer is E. Is there any other easy way except to list down the combinations. I took close to 2 minutes to write down the combination, verify and come with solution.

A)He can get 2 if he gets the first question (level 2) correct and nothing else.
B)He can get 3 if he gets the first question (level 2) wrong, then gets the second (level 1) and third (level 2) questions correct.
C)He can get 4 if he gets the first question (level 2) correct, second question (level 3) wrong and third question (level 2) correct
D)He can get 5 if he gets the first question (level 2) correct and the second question (level 3) correct and third question wrong.
E)Can't find any way that he can get 6

No, no shortcuts, that's why I picked 3 questions in a row, and not 4 :)

No, no shortcuts, that's why I picked 3 questions in a row, and not 4 :)

The only shortcut, could be if you had started with option E (and tried to get 6 out of three questions!)
