1. There have been thousands (and millions) of people who have done Self-Study. Many people here did it because courses were not available, feasible, or we were the kind of people who just thought they knew better :lol
2. Similar to how the fitness works - you can sign up for a gym membership or you can hire a personal trainer or you can work out in a class. It is really up to a person. You can get to the same result, it just depends what gets you there better/faster and with least pain. Depends on what your priority is. If tutoring is the option you feel that works best for you and you can afford it then go for it. No reason to wait until you get lost (most people who are lost don't realize it until they are really really lost). It will give better results and better ROI if you start sooner than later, esp if you do have a lot going on. An appointment with tutor can keep you honest and disciplined and not slacking.
3. So if you feel you would do best with a tutor - I would start now while the time is on your side. Let them develop a plan for you to study on your own and then you can always bug them and ping them. I would negotiate a free set of "emails" or "texts" you don't want to wait a week to ask them a question. That would be silly.
4. If a person charges $200/hour - that's top of line what
MGMAT and Veritas Prep charges, I would want to make sure they are top notch. Again, i don't know if a $100/hour tutor for 10 hours is better than a $200/r for 5. I would probably ask for references and ask their previous clients how long they studied and it is realistic to get help in 5.
5. What you are buying is confidence, expediency, strong shoulder, and experience. You are not buying knowledge when you are hiring a tutor. All of the info is out there. It is in the books and you can get it. All a tutor can help you with is get it faster, and focus in the most important things and stay on track and on schedule.
Ultimately many roads to the same place. Tutor is the shortest one but you pay for the time/stress savings.
