This exercise can be regarded as two successive “pick a group” problems. Lothar picks 2 out of 6 Utopian stamps, and then 2 out of 4 Cornucopian stamps. Each selection may be computed by using the combinations formula to compute the number of groups of size 2 of each type of stamp. To get the total number of ways, multiply the Utopian result and the Cornucopian result. Lothar can choose the Utopian stamps in \(\frac{6*5}{2!}=15\) ways and the Cornucopian stamps in \(\frac{4*3}{2!}=6\) ways, so together, there are 15 × 6 = 90 possible ways for Lothar to give Peggy Sue two stamps of each type.
Alternatively, use the textbook formula.
The correct answer is (B): Quantity B is greater.
